Use Logos, Pathos & Ethos to Fist Fight Alexie
Final Project for The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven

I. Pathos: the creative paper
a. Select your favorite theme or story or character.
b. Select a song or series of literature terms or Sherman Alexie interview that supports your choice.
c. Select a written form (essay, poem, ingredients, etc.) and persuade the reader of your choices.
d. Utilizing the writing process, bring your creative paper to the final stage.

II. Logos: the academic paper
a. Select one of the following topics:
i. Investigate the relationship between the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) and a specific reservation.
ii. Explore the accuracy of the portrayal of alcoholism in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven compared to statistics provided by the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov).
iii. Compare The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven with its film adaptation, Smoke Signals: what was left out and what is included in the film and the possible reasons behind these decisions.
iv. Research the Native-American ritual of the Ghostdance; how does it function as a symbol is Alexie’s stories.
v. Analyze the films Dancing with Wolves and The Last of the Mohicans in terms of how they do or do not perpetuate stereotypes of Native Americans.
vi. Other topics will also be considered.
b. Rewrite the topic in the form of a thesis statement.
c. Using 3 quotes from the text and 3 quotes from outside sources compose a 5-paragraph (minimum) paper investigating your thesis or focus statement.
d. Utilizing the writing process, bring your creative paper to the final stage.


III. Logos, pathos, ethos: the art part
a. As with previous projects, the art part will be used during your presentation.
b. Select an art part that will complement spirit of the writing.
1. Create an instrument that celebrates indigenous cultures.
2. Compose your own short story in the style of Alexie.
3. Create a poster that reflects the spirit of your creative or academic paper.
4. Compose a theme song for a chapter or the book.
5. Other ideas will be considered on an individual basis.
