Into the Wild: "Pilgrim" or "Wacko"?
Part I: Written: A persuasive essay
1. Answer the following question: In your opinion was Chris McCandless a "Pilgrim," as Jon Krakauer describes him, or "a wacko," as many letters to Outside magazine claimed?
2. The essay must follow the Writing Workshop process of development.
Prewriting: webbing, mapping, or brainstorming
Rough Draft (D1): initial draft, double-space
Self-Edit: conference with teacher or peer
Rewrite: incorporate corrections, refinements
Final due will be decided in class.
Note: As resources for this essay use the following: notes from mini-lessons, Into the Wild, Internet, and any documented outside sources to support your position.
Minimum requirement: 5 paragraph essay with 3 direct quotes from text to support your position.
Part II: The Art Part
1. What do you believe are the three (3) most significant events in Chris “Alexander Supertramp” McCandless’ life?
2. Create/Find a symbol for each of these events.
a. Symbol = something that represents something else.
b. The following are some suggestions of resources
Magazine pictures
Found objects/ art
Music
Photographs.
(The only limit to this part of the project is your imagination)
3. Be ready to share your symbols with the class during your presentation.
